Magnetism was a popular topic for lectures in natural philosophy, illustrated with lodestones, i.e. naturally-occuring magnets, or with artifical magnets. This large stone, with its silver mounting and mahogany stand, was sufficiently powerful to lift the heavy weight that accompanies it.
