Brief Description: | A purplish-brown vignette gelatine print mounted on card. It is a portrait of the head and shoulders of W. M. Wheeler, with his head facing slightly to the right. His signature is along the bottom of the photograph. The photographer's printed details on the back include the date 1873, but the photograph is later than that. It is enclosed within a mount or stand consisting of a thick, heavy piece of glass with bevelled edges, and with silvering and black paint on the under-side (creating a frame which is a silver mirror and disguises the fact that the photograph is a carte de visite), and a wooden back with three brass clasps that hold the cover -glass, the upper one movable on a spring, and a hinged wooden leg, allowing the ensemble to stand upright. | ||||||||||
Primary Inscriptions: | Signed by the subject on the photograph.
