Brief Description: | Carte de visite (albumen print mounted on card) of a man seated full length facing left, holding an open book. Presumably he is a member of the Gunther family. The photographer Samuel Fry, who already had portrait studios in London and Brighton, established a studio at his home in Surbiton Park Terrace in 1865, and specialised in carte-de-visite portraits. He was distantly related to the Fry involved in the London photographic firm Elliott & Fry. Loosely enclosed (with other papers) in R. T. Gunther's archival copy of Gunther Family Records (1910), a privately published family history compiled by himself and his father Albert Gunther.
Primary Inscriptions: | Printed on front: 'Samuel Fry & Co.'; printed on back: 'Samuel Fry | 9, Surbiton Park Terrace | Kingston-on-Thames | S.W.'.
A pencil inscription on back is too faint to read.
