Brief Description: | Carte de visite (albumen print mounted on card), the photograph cut slightly unevenly. Portrait of (Sir) Henry W. Acland, standing full length, turned to right almost in profile, leaning in a doorway and holding an open book as if reading. The doorway is surrounded by a climbing plant and there is a small rockery with ferns beneath a large ?trellis left. Carte de visite portraits taken out of a studio or out of doors are uncommon, but this was probably taken in the garden of Acland's house in Broad Street, Oxford. The fashionable Oxford photographer Guggenheim is known to have photographed the Aclands at their home in 1866. This image does not appear in the Acland family albums in the Bodleian Library.
Primary Inscriptions: | Signed on front of mount: 'Hy W Acland F.R.S.'.
Printed photographer's details on back: 'J. Guggenheim, | 56, High St., | Oxford. | ...'.
Provenance: | Presented by Lady Dalrymple-Champneys in 1989. It was removed from one of three carte de visite albums that had belonged to the family of her husband Sir Weldon Dalrymple-Champneys, whose father, the obstetrician Sir Francis Champneys (1848-1930), was an acquaintance of Acland.
