English HYGROMETER     1829 to 1848

Signed: 'MASONS HYGROMETER A. Pastorelli London".

Maroon coloured, leather-covered case, with red, floral-patterned cloth and red velvet lining, dimensions 180 x 52 x 50 mm. The instrument is of brass and glass, and is fixed to the case which acts as a stand; overall height mounted 218 mm.

There are two mercury thermometers, scales 10° to 112°F, one of which is wrapped round by cloth with a wick to a reservoir of water. Evaporation cools this bulb, and humidity is found by consulting a set of tables for the difference in the readings between the thermometers.

A. Pastorellli was at 4 Cross Street, Hatton Garden, from 1829, and was joined by a son in 1848.
