Commercial transistor of the late 1950s. The transistor started to take over the functions of the thermionic valve. The world's first transistor radio was launched in the USA in 1954; the first all-British transistor radio was introduced by Pam (Radio & TV) Ltd, a subsidiary of Pye Ltd, in 1956.
