?Turkish COMPASS

? c. 1800

Brass, etc. Unsigned and undated.

On the compass plate is engraved a scale of degrees, in two semi-circles of 180°, and a compass-rose of eight points, each of which is named; the North point is decorated with a crescent. Underneath the compass-box are engraved the names of sixteen places, including Constantinople, Rhodes, Cairo, Basra, Shîrâz, Cádiz, Baghdad, Mecca, Paris, al-Mansûra and Jerusalem. Probably this compass once formed part of a sundial; it is possible that it was made in Europe for the Eastern market.
