German ASTRONOMICAL COMPENDIUM
c.1570

Gilt, silvered and enamelled brass. Unsigned and undated; probably by Christoph Schissler the Elder.

Includes:

1. A lunar volvelle.

2. A combined wind- and compass- rose.

3. An inclining string-gnomon dial for latitudes 37°-55°.

4. A nocturnal, for use with either "DVBHE VRSA MEIORIS" or "KOAB VRSA MINORIS".

5. A table of the latitudes of 24 places.

Some of the decoration on this compendium has been etched by acid. This method of decoration was often used by Schissler, as well as the more usual engraved decoration.
