German horizontal dials

A portable horizontal dial needs a magnetic compass for orientation and, in its simplest form, works in only one latitude. Two examples here [1, 4] can be inclined to work in a range of latitudes, and the instrument by Schissler [1] has volvelles for conversion between different systems of hours and for converting readings taken by moonlight into solar time.
