Astrolabes with a difference

There are many varieties of astrolabe. The astrolabe-quadrant is in effect an astrolabe folded twice to make a quarter circle [1]. Even more compact is the linear astrolabe where all the significant information is projected onto a single line. No original examples survive and [2] is a reconstruction based on medieval manuscript treatises. The mariner's astrolabe [3] is an astrolabe in name only, intended simply for observation at sea and having none of the mathematical and astronomical features of other astrolabes.
