John Selden collection

The collection of the English jurist and orientalist John Selden (1584-1654) arrived at the Bodleian Library in 1659.

It was first catalogued in Edward Bernard, Catalogi librorum manuscriptorum AngliƦ et HiberniƦ in unum collecti (2 vols., Oxford, '1697' [really 1698]) and subsequently in vol. 2 part i (1922) of Falconer Madan, et al., A summary catalogue of western manuscripts in the Bodleian Library at Oxford which have not hitherto been catalogued in the Quarto series (7 vols. in 8 [vol. II in 2 parts], Oxford, 1895-1953.

At the time of publication of the Summary Catalogue volume both the astrolabe and Chinese compass now in MHS were kept in the Bodleian's Picture Gallery.
