Temporary exhibition label - "Succession"

" Diya al-Din Muhammad, great-grandson / With the fourth generation of the family the signature on the instruments becomes further extended to 'Diya al-Din Muhammad ibn Qa'im Muhammad ibn Mulla Isa ibn Shayk Allahdad Humayun's astrolabist of Lahore'. / Astrolabes such as this example of 1658/9 remained a key part of the family tradition. But the workshop also handed down a special skill in the manufacture of globes. The simplest way to construct a metal globe is to make two hemisphere and join them together. The Lahore family specialised in casting complete hollow spheres using the lost wax method. The celestial globe of 1663/4 displayed here has been made by this intricate and laborious technique."
