MODEL of Swiss COUNTING BOARD with German COUNTERS
original: 16th century

The wooden counting board, a model of one used at Basle, is incised with the letters 'm' 'c', 'x', 'lb', 's' and 'd', for thousands, hundred, tens, pounds, shillings and pence respectively.

On the board are shown two ?16th century counters, or jettons. One bears the words "HANNS. KRAVWICKEL. IN. NVRENBE. [i.e. Nuremberg]" surrounding three fleurs de lys between three crowns, and the words "VERB VM. DOMINI. MANET. IN. ETERN." around an orb within a trefoil. The other jetton, also probably from Nuremberg, has an orb on one side and a lion on the other.
