?North African NOCTURNAL with a sundial and a lunar volvelle and aspectarium.

c 16th century A.D.

Brass. Unsigned and undated. The inscriptions are in Arabic script with numerals of European or possibly Maghribi type. The months are given in an Arabic transliteration of the European names almost identical with that found on Hispano-Moorish astrolabes; the names of the Signs of the Zodiac are given in Arabic.

This nocturnal is similar to that made by Geminus in 1589 (shown in this case), and may have been inspired by an instrument of this type.
