German DECORATIVE NOCTURNAL
late 19th century

Cast bronze, unsigned and undated; diameter 127 mm, radial length of pointer 222 mm.

This is an example of a class of elaborately decorated instruments made in bronze or white metal, none of which can function properly as a nocturnal. (i.e., there is no central hole). They were presumably intended as decorative items, but may have been 'fakes'.
