English NOCTURNAL
c.1700

Wood, with brass boss. Unsigned and undated. 115 mm. diameter; 222 mm. maximum length.

Like the two adjacent wooden nocturnals, it is marked 'BOTH BEARS' and is made for use with either the Pointers of the Great Bear or the bright star of the Little Bear. The smaller disc has a lunar scale.

These three wooden nocturnals are of a type common in England in the late 17th and early 18th centuries.
