English GUNNER'S CALLIPERS
1820s or 1830s

Brass. Signed 'Gilbert London'. Length 178 mm. (7 inches).

The outer edges of both limbs are divided in inches, forming a twelve-inch rule when fully opened out. Scales of degrees and inches at the curved end show the distance between the steel-tipped points. Various scales and tables for different types of artillery and shot are engraved on both sides.

The heart-shaped symbol is the ownership mark of the East India Company. This type of instrument, of uniquely English design, was used by artillery officers during the 18th and 19th centuries.
