Military measures

Many mathematical instruments have been created to meet military needs. Special devices were used to measure round shot, either by clasping the ball [1], measuring it between steel points [2], or transferring the diameter to a gauge [3] to read off its weight. There are special-purpose tools for marking the centre-line of a heavy gun [4]. Instruments with a plumb bob measure the angle of elevation of a cannon, either by inserting a rod into the muzzle [5] or being placed on top of the barrel [6, 7].
