German DIPTYCH DIAL
1612

Ivory, gilt brass, etc. With the maker's mark, {crown symbol}, of Paul Reinman; undated, but the table of epacts begins with the year 1612.

Includes: 1. Wind-rose and compass viewing-hole; 2. Vertical pin-gnomon dial showing the length of the day and the Sun's declination, vertical pin-gnomon dial for planetary hours, and table of latitudes; 3. Horizontal string-gnomon dial adjustable for latitudes 39°, 42°, 45°, 48°, 51° & 54°, cup-dials for Italian and Babylonian hours, and compass; 4. Combined lunar volvelle (incomplete) and table of Julian and Gregorian epacts.

The engraved decoration includes a picture of the Virgin and Child upon a crescent.
