Drum Microscope, English, c. 1840

Brief Description: A cylindrical, brass housing stands on a brass ring. The sides of the housing are cut away to allow access to the stage and light to the concave mirror below it. The circular stage has a recessed stage hole and two pinholes. Horizontal slots in the housing allow sliders to be positioned beneath the stage and held in place by a spring. A rack and pinion moves the body up and down for focusing. The body has an inner draw tube with an eyepiece of two lenses, a field lens and a nose with an internal thread for objectives. The accessories with this microscope are six objectives, an objective in a Lieberkuhn, a bull's-eye lens, a glass phial, a brass talc box, a live box, a brass dish with a glass bottom, brass forceps, stage forceps, a lens in a brass setting and four ivory sliders. The fitted wooden box has red velvet padding in the lid.
