A brass collar on the end of the sleeve has a steel spring clip to hold specimens and acts as a stage. An oil lamp is set in front of the collar. It consists of a circular, brass reservoir on which the fitment is mounted. Above this is a conical chimney with an oval window. The lamp is supported on a bar that slides into a mount, with a tightening screw to hold it in pace. The instrument and lamp are screwed to a shaped wooden base.
