Brief Description: English Compound, Society of Arts, microscope with condenser lens on a stand and two dividing objectives and accessories in wooden case.

The monocular body tube is carried by an arm at the top of the limb. The eyepiece pushes into the top of the limb and the objective screws into the underside of the arm. A rack and pinion, operated by two mill-edged knobs, extends a cylindrical pillar from the limb on which the arm is fixed. The circular stage is faced with black glass. Two clips, with screws at their ends, are mounted at above the stage face and below the stage is a rotating disk with four apertures. The limb can swivel in its mounting which is held on trunnions on a flat tripod foot. the whole instrument is copper alloy. The case is mahogany and holds a tray with accessories, including two objectives in cans, two eyepieces, a stage well on a copper alloy plate, a frame for slides, copper alloy forceps and stage forceps on a copper alloy pin with a cork disk.

This instrument was presented in 1881 to Thomas Ruddy (1842-1912), a horticulturist and amateur geologist.
