Brief Description: Oval portrait in moulded frame. The sitter's arm rests on a drawing on a table and he holds dividers and a pencil. On the table are a pantograph, ebony octant and instrument case. A telescopic level on a tripod stands behind.
Primary Inscriptions: Manuscript label on reverse: "This is a painting of | Mr. John Whalley of Chester | Architect & Surveyor. | Born 1825 -- [ins: Portrait] done for | his 21st birthday 1846. | Original frame." Added in other ink "(died October 1903". The label overlies a previous inscription written directly on the backing paper.
Provenance: Purchased from Tesseract, 25 July 2014. The portrait was previously sold in Chester in 2010.
