"The annexed is a description of the use of a new-invented instrument, which, I trust, will be found useful at Sea. I, therefore, beg leave to creave your patronage in causing the Model to be laid before the Honourable Board of Longitude for their inspection, that scientific judgement may be passed upon it, to approve, or disapprove, of the utility of such an Instrument at Sea."
