Brief Description: H. B. George, The Oberland and its Glaciers: Explored and Illustrated with Ice-Axe and Camera (London: Alfred W. Bennett, 1866). Bound in blue cloth, with gold-blocked vignette of explorers' equipment including camera and ice-axe on front. Frontispiece photograph + title page with small photograph + pp.iii-xii + map + 243 pages + flyleaf, + 10 unnumbered plates consisting of mounted photographs, with tissue protectors. Smaller photographs are mounted in the text, so that there are 28 altogether, 17 (including title page) on text pages and 11 (including frontispiece) as plates. Some pages loose.

This is one of the most famous of the early printed books illustrated with real photographs. They are albumen prints, all in good condition with very strong browns, except for the frontispiece (which is more faded and yellowy). They show glaciers and spectacular mountain scenery, and one shows the expedition party (which included two ladies). The photographer, Ernest Edwards, writes as an appendix an interesting account of his equipment and the difficulties of using the wet collodion process in such an environment. Like other pioneering photographically-illustrated books (see 11887, 13006, 13013, 13015) the motivation lay in the sense not only that photography depicted things as they really were but that it had a special role in communicating things seldom seen - microscopical images or in this case remote places - to a wider audience. For another book containing photographs of glaciers see 13018.
