Brief Description: The unusually prominent label (where 'resolve' is presumably an error for resolver) was probably attached at a slightly later date for exhibition purposes.
A ball resolver is a mechanical means of performing certain mathematical computations, especially as a component of analogue computing systems applied to purposes such as aircraft navigation. Miniature ball resolvers such as this one-inch version were used on aircraft equipment developed by Elliott, for instance for the RAF's 'Blue Steel' guided missile (in service c.1960-65), to compute distance from airspeed and direction.
