Brief Description: Hugo Hirst (1863-1943), later Lord Hirst, was an electrical engineer who co-founded the General Electric Apparatus Company (GEC) with Gustav Byng in 1886. In 1900, the company became a public limited company, the General Electric Company Ltd (GEC), and Hirst became the Managing Director. In 1910, he became Chairman of GEC, a position he retained until his death of heart failure in 1943. Signed and dated in the upper left-hand corner. Painting is unglazed and framed in a gilt frame, card label on the lower side of the frame 'Lord Hirst of Witton'. The reverse has a metal chain for hanging. The reverse of the canvas is printed in both the upper and lower halves 'Prepared by O. Roberson & Co  Ltd 88 Long Acre London'. The stretching and priming details are also given on another label on the crossbar 'Straining May 1933 Priming January 1934'.
