Brief Description: Stereoscopic photograph (collodion positive on glass) of a statue or figurine, Contained in a folding viewer, c.1853. Stereoscopic collodion positive on glass (ambrotype), smaller than usual format, approximately 3 x 4½ inches. Disbound, with remains of paper edging along top and bottom edges, together with separate black-painted backing plate of glass. Statue or figurine of a standing classical nude with cloth and low pillar (resembling the form usually termed the Greek slave but without chains).
The viewer is a compact hinged case (similar to a daguerreotype case) of wood covered with thin wine-red leather, with a single press clasp and inside a card and leather lens holder with sides, that folds down into the case. The photograph is meant to be inserted in the recess in the lid, which has a black silk ribbon to aid its removal.
Primary Inscriptions: Gold lettering on lens holder: 'REGD 12TH JANY 1853.'.
