The lid of the package that the medal was mailed in remains. It had a postage stamp from Belgium for 10 c.
Pierre Joseph van Beneden (1809-1894) was a nauralist who founded in 1843 the first laboratory and aquarium for the study of marine life. In 1881 he was president of the Royal Belgian Academy
