Josiah Ayrton at the eyepiece of his large reflecting telescope, wearing his observer's cap; he is seated on a wooden scaffold structure (giving access to the telescope's top end) within an observatory building, the roof aperture being just visible at the top of the image. Vertical format. High gloss black and white. Ayrton is presumably an amateur astronomer with his private observatory at South Shields, though no further information about him has been found.
