Brief Description: In packet 33 with 3 experimental mercurial photographs, which are light brown and dated December 17 and 19, 1842. The note is thus presumably contemporary with them. There is no black specimen.

Primary Inscriptions: The note reads: 'Mercurial Photographs containing no Silver or Gold; | The Black Specimen is prepared by the process described in Art.229 of Sir J. Herschel's paper on Photography Phil. Trans. 1842, Part 2; | The Brown Specimens by processes not hitherto described' [in Herschel's hand].
Provenance: Presented by Miss Herschel and Lady Lubbock in 1928. They were the two surviving and youngest children of Sir John Herschel (Francisca and Constance).
