It was intended for a circumferentor, and functions both as a compass and a sundial. The sheet of paper has two deckle edges, has been folded and contains a number of worm holes. An unusual feature (which might have been cut away had it been mounted for use) is the exact date engraved just outside the image area.
Primary Inscriptions: Signed at the centre of the compass " Henry Sutton Londini fecit * 1653 * "; also dated on the plate but outside the compass image " August 16 . 1653 . "
Provenance: Purchased from Trevor Philip and Sons, London, in 1999. Purchased with the aid of a PRISM grant.
