Brief Description: Compound microscope, by C. Collins, London, c. 1867. The optical components are held horizontally in a clamp, with a tightening screw, on a turned copper alloy pillar. A draw tube with an eyepiece pushes into an inner body tube, which has an internal thread at the end for an objective. This assembly pushes into an outer sleeve. A copper alloy collar on the end of the sleeve has a steel spring clip to hold specimens and acts as a stage. An oil lamp is set in front of the collar. It consists of a circular, copper alloy reservoir on which the fitment is mounted. Above this is a conical chimney with an oval window. The lamp is supported on a bar that slides into a mount, with a tightening screw to hold it in pace. The instrument and lamp are screwed to a shaped wooden base.
