Brief Description: Early French achromatic microscope with case by V. Chevalier, Paris, c. 1835. The main body of the copper alloy microscope is supported by a pillar on a flat, folding tripod foot. The body tube is held by an arm attached to the pillar by a compass joint. Objectives screw into the conical nose and an eyepiece with two lenses screws into the top of the tube.  An Amici prism is mounted above the stage held by a collar on the body. A square sectioned limb hangs below the arm. The rectangular stage has two spring clips for specimens. It is racked up and down for focusing by a mechanism within the limb, operated by an ivory knob. A Plano-concave mirror in a horseshoe mount is set on the limb, on a sliding sleeve below the stage. The eyepiece and the smaller objective lens are separate parts. The case is a wooden box with a hinged lid, hook-fasteners, a locking mechanism, raised sections with black fabric padding to hold the microscope securely when stored and slots for accessories or smaller parts.
