Brief Description: Sphere; rete; gnomon. The inscriptions on the rete are engraved, those on the sphere are damascened.

The two halves of the sphere are of different thicknesses. The almucantar and azimuth hemisphere is thicker to accommodate the series of drilled holes for the pole (and it also has some additional metal for the screw fit of the hemispheres). It weighs 104.4g; the half for the hours is 57.3g. The rete (including all three retaining pins) is 81.1g.
Primary Inscriptions: "Work of Musa. Year 885" inlaid on the sphere.
Provenance: Purchased in 1962 with grants received from the Goldsmiths' Company, Lord Leigh's Fund, the Hulme Surplus Reserve Fund, the National Art Collections Fund, and the Higher Studies Fund.
