Brief Description: Carbon print from a collodion glass negative, mounted on card beneath a pale green card mat, with additional aperture for the signature; framed and glazed. Portrait of Sir John Herschel, head only, full face looking front. Dark brown colour. Slightly foxed, and with stains resulting from the former backing board. Originally framed and glazed, the frame was removed at some period; backed with museum board and reframed in modern frame and glass for Museum display purposes in 1989.
This famous photograph, an icon of early photographic portraiture as well as a profoundly eloquent portrait of one of the great figures of 19th-century science, was taken in April 1867, by the wet collodion negative process, and originally printed as an albumen print. A limited number of unfadable carbon prints were then made for exhibition or sale, with mounts signed by the subject, of which this is one.
For fuller historical and descriptive commentary see narratives.
Primary Inscriptions: Signed by the subject on mount: 'J. F. W. Herschel'.
