Underneath the compass-box are engraved the names of sixteen places, including Constantinople, Rhodes, Cairo, Basra, Shîrâz, Cádiz, Baghdad, Mecca, Paris, al-Mansûra and Jerusalem. Probably this compass once formed part of a sundial; it is possible that it was made in Europe for the Eastern Market.|
