Brief Description: Equal-arm balance (beam length 56 mm) on brass pedestal support, with two wires poises, shaped like a Z and a U; with a hook-shaped weight suspended from the left of the beam, and on the right a hook to carry the yarn. Pendulous index on the front of the pedestal has a horizontal arm for judging the balance of the beam. There are two brass templates, for English wool counts and for English cotton counts: one plate is signed by"GEO. THOMAS & Co. LTD. MANCHESTER", the other (cotton) by "J. NESBITT MANCHESTER". A third plate is missing.
Primary Inscriptions: "THOMAS' STANDARD MAKE. UNIVERSAL (No. 1) YARN ASSORTED BALANCE. GEO. THOMAS & Co. LTD. MANCHESTER" [impressed in gold on the top of the black-leatherette-covered wooden box].
