Brief Description: Globe with a brass collar and stopcock. The evacuated globe was suspended from a beam balance and weighed. The atmospheric air or gas was next let in from a bell jar inverted in a pneumatic trough, or from a gazometer and its weight again determined. The difference between these two measurements was the weight of the air or gas, and by knowing its volume its specific gravity could be calculated.
