Brief Description: Octagonal base with inset compass bowl (with variation indicator); sprung folding plumb level; four levelling feet; latitude scale (20-70°) with index controlling elevation of sprung hinged hour dial by a vertical cam; hour dial has a compass rose scale and an alidade carrying a minute dial with a central socket for a wind vane. The underside of the compass bowl has a simple volvelle relating days of the week to the date in the month. With red morocco-covered, blue silk-lined pasteboard case with lunar volvelle and aspectarium in the lid. Manuscript instruction sheet is now MS Museum 164.
