Brief Description: Mater; rete for 28 stars; 4 plates; alidade; horse. The mater is engraved with a gazeteer of ca. 30 places. On the back, at the lowest part of the border, there is some ornamental engraving.
Primary Inscriptions: "This astrolabe was made by the servant, yearning for God the forgiving,Shams ad-din Muhammad Saffar, in the year 886" on the back. "Shams ad-din Muhammad Hashim" on the back of the kursi.
Provenance: Presented by Lewis Evans. Formerly in the Richard Collection. It was bought by Evans on 13 July 1921, from I. Sassoon & Co. of 62 Mortimer St.
