Brief Description: This brass instrument has a Ross type stand with a flat tripod foot and trunions supporting the limb. Two milled knobs rack a bar, with a triangular cross section, from within the limb for coarse focusing. The Wenham binocular body is carried on an arm at the top of the bar, a milled head on a screw on the arm operates the fine focus. The mechanical stage is mounted on the limb at the level of the trunions. A rotating disk with four apertures is mounted on a cylinder attached to the underside of the stage. The lower end of the limb holds the plano-concave mirror, below the stage, set on a pivoting arm on a sliding sleeve.
Primary Inscriptions: "J SWITH 15 KINGSLAND Rd. NE Optician" (within an oval strap and buckle.
Provenance: Lent by the Royal Microscopical Society in 1970. Purchased by the RMS in December 1867.
