Brief Description: Carte de visite (albumen print mounted on card) of G. G. Stokes, seated three-quarter length, turned and looking to right, his left arm resting on a table beside a ?polariscope. He holds one of its components.
Sir George Gabriel Stokes (1819-1903) was a physicist with wide interests but associated particularly with optical research, and by the 1860s eminent in the public aspects of science. The photograph was taken at 'Sawyer's Italian Studios' in Norwich on the occasion of the 1868 meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, of which he was president the following year. The dated publication label is unusual, and indicates that its commercial distribution was taken over by a London firm. Photographs were not automatically protected by copyright at the time, but commercial and artistic photographers obtained such rights by registering each photograph, hence the phrase 'Copyright Registered'.
Primary Inscriptions: Printed photographer's details on front of mount: 'J. R. Sawyer Norwich', partly obscured by printed label: 'Published Septr. 2nd- 1868. Copyright Registered.'. Fuller printed details on back, giving the name as 'Sawyer's Italian Studios'. Publisher's or distributor's stamp on back: 'Published by [?]Marion & Co. London'.
Provenance: Removed from the Museum library's copy of J. H. Kyan, On the Elements of Light ... (London, 1838), which belonged originally to W. E. Surtees and was in the Surtees Library, Taunton Castle.
