Jacob Kramer (1892-1962) was a very distinguished artist, of Russian Jewish parentage, who came to England as a child in 1900. He was a fashionable portraitist, especially among the growing community of exiled Jews, and his other work attracted much admiration. Yet he spent his later life in poverty, and often executed mediocre portraits for ready money. He lived most of his life in the northern town of Leeds. The circumstances of his drawing Einstein in Oxford, perhaps in the early 1930s (when Einstein paid several visits to Oxford and was a visiting fellow of Christ Church), are not known.
