|Brief Description:||Wooden folding A-level with brass plumb bob. Listed on p. 7 of the 1850 edition of W. and S. Jones' Catalogue of Optical, Mathematical, and Philosophical Instruments as "J. Bailey Denton's A. Level, for the use of workmen in the drainage of land, formation of water meadows, the making of roads, &c. £1 10s 0d". For comparison, plain spirit levels in wood or brass ranged from 4s to £1 18s. John Bailey Denton (1814-1893) was a surveyor and civil engineer; see the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.|
