Brief Description: Albumen print mounted on card, cabinet format. Portrait of Sir John Scott Burdon Sanderson, head and shoulders, looking to left and slightly upwards, vignetted. Contained in a black leather-covered protective and display case with double hinged front, brass clasp, and rear support. The photograph is in as-new condition when removed from the case.
The photograph in this form is Edwardian ('Photographers to Their Majesties King Edward VII. & Queen Alexandra'), so was produced for the family of J. S. Haldane (his nephew) about the time of Burdon Sanderson's death in 1905; the photograph was probably taken in the 1880s.
Primary Inscriptions: Photographer's name on front of mount: 'Russell & Sons [Royal Arms] 17. Baker Street London. W. ...', & on back: 'J. Russell & Sons 17, Baker Street _ Portman Square W. ...' (other addresses, royal appointments & arms, etc). Case signed on back: 'Alex. Jones & Co. 164. Regent St. W.'.
Provenance: Presented by Mrs Lois Godfrey in 1967. Among items taken by the Museum from the private laboratory of her grandfather J. S. Haldane, prior to the demolition of his house (the site of Wolfson College, Oxford).
