Brief Description: Engraved illustration from an early 19th-century technical work or encyclopedia, showing sectional or cut-away views of the 'Single acting Engine for pumping at Chelsea Water Works' (as Fig.1, the general view, is subtitled). The Boulton & Watt steam engine at Chelsea dated from about 1780. The engraver is the American engraver, designer, and inventor Christian Gobrecht, best known for his designs of US coins. Framed and glazed.
Primary Inscriptions: Headed 'Steam Engine. | Mr. Watt's Engine.' & 'Plate III & IV'. Signed below 'C. Gobrecht Sculpt.'.
