Photograph (Gelatine Print) of G. H. Gabb in his Laboratory, Early 20th Century

Inventory Number: 13308
Object Type:
Persons: George Hugh Gabb
Date Created:
Accession Number: 1949-10
Brief Description: Gelatine print, mounted on card with rounded corners and bevelled gilt edges. G. H. Gabb half length in half profile is seated to right writing, the table also containing scientific instruments and chemical apparatus including a microscope and a chemical balance, as well as a lamp. Behind him are shelves of chemical jars, and beyond left are further tables or benches and apparatus, and a print hangs on the wall centre. It is not clear whether this is the same laboratory shown in another photograph (12802 and 12803), which is the milk analysis laboratory at Welford & Co., London, where he worked; if different it is probably a private laboratory at his home. It is a self-portrait; the glass negative is also in the Museum's collection.
The print is heavily silver-tarnished in the dark areas. On the back of the mount, in Gabb's hand, are notes and drawings relating to the design of a frame, presumably for this photograph, which has slight remains of mounting on the front edges of the card.
Primary Inscriptions: Notes and drawings re framing on back of mount.
Provenance: Presented by the Executors of G. H. Gabb in 1949.
