Armillary Sphere, Italian, c. 1500

Inventory Number: 12765
Object Type: armillary sphere
Place Created: Italy Europe
Accession Number: 1955-64
Brief Description: This is the oldest armillary sphere in the Museum's collection. While "circa 1500" remains a safely conservative date, and was the assumed date when the Museum purchased it in 1955, it has several times since been published with the date c.1425. This is John North's dating based on the stellar longitudes marked on the ecliptic circle; that may of course mean merely that the maker was utilising tables of that date. Publishing North's note in 1969, Francis Maddison concluded "it is probably of the fifteenth century, and one of the oldest surviving armillary spheres".
Primary Inscriptions: Unsigned, undated
Provenance: Purchased from Dr. E. Weil in 1955.
