Photograph (Albumen Print) of a Miniature Self-Portrait of James Ferguson, 1869

Inventory Number: 12709
Object Type:
Persons: Ebenezer Henderson (Author)
James Ferguson (Subject)
Date Created: 1869
Place Created: Edinburgh Scotland United Kingdom Europe
Accession Number: 1940-6
Brief Description: Albumen print mounted on page of book, Ebenezer Henderson, 'Life of James Ferguson ...' (published 1867, addenda 1870). Copy of an ink on vellum miniature self-portrait of James Ferguson, nearly half length, in an oval frame. Photograph cut oval. The miniature belonged to Nicholas Milne, a descendant of Ferguson, and the book is Milne's own modified copy of Henderson's biography.
The miniature is described on pp.xxviii-xxix of the 1870 'Addenda' as follows: ' "A miniature of Ferguson in Indian ink, on vellum - done by Ferguson himself. It is slightly different from the Townsend likeness, but it bears a resemblance to it." --- Mr. Milne, some time ago, sent us a photograph from it, which we here acknowledge with many thanks. --- ["]As this miniature is the same in size and form of frame as that of Mrs. Ferguson's miniature likeness, mentioned at p.47, it is likely they were companion portraits." --- (This miniature of Ferguson was given by Ferguson's sister Janet to Mr. Robert Milne, and is now the property of his only surviving son, Nicholas Milne, Esq.)'.
